1. Standard Overview
ASTM A312/A312M-24b (published in October 2024) covers core requirements such as material properties, manufacturing processes, inspection and testing, and is widely used in chemical, petroleum, food, pharmaceutical and marine engineering fields.
2. Core Technical Requirements
2.1 Materials and Manufacturing Processes
Austenitic stainless steel: such as TP304, TP316L, TP347H, etc., containing elements such as chromium (Cr), nickel (Ni), molybdenum (Mo), etc., with excellent corrosion resistance and high temperature strength.
Duplex stainless steel: such as UNS S31254 (254SMO), suitable for extreme corrosive environments (such as acid media containing halides).
Welded pipe: Automatic welding technology such as TIG and MIG is used, and the weld needs to be subjected to radiographic inspection (such as ASME B31.3 standard) and intergranular corrosion test (ASTM A262 method E).
Solution annealing: Austenitic steel needs to be rapidly cooled at 1040-1100 degree to eliminate stress and improve corrosion resistance.
Stabilization treatment: Grades containing titanium (TP321H) or niobium (TP347H) require additional heat treatment to prevent intergranular corrosion.
2.2 Chemical composition

2.3 Dimension tolerance and surface treatment
Cold drawn tube: Tolerance ±{{0}}.10 mm for diameter Less than or equal to 25.4 mm, tolerance ±0.25 mm for diameter Less than or equal to 88.9 mm.
Hot rolled tube: Tolerance ±1.6 mm for diameter Less than or equal to 127 mm.
Cold drawn tube: tolerance + 20%/-0% for wall thickness ≤3 mm, tolerance + 22%/-0% for wall thickness >3 mm.
Inner and outer walls need to be mechanically polished (roughness Less than or equal to 0.8μm), pickled or passivated to meet sanitary requirements (such as food industry).
3. Key technical points
3.1 "H" grade and high temperature performance
Grades containing "H" (such as TP347H, TP316H): By increasing the carbon content or adding niobium and titanium, the high temperature creep rupture strength is enhanced, which is suitable for supercritical boiler superheaters (temperature Less than or equal to 871 degree ).
Application case: TP347H is used for large boiler superheater tubes, and it still maintains excellent anti-oxidation and anti-corrosion properties at 750 degree .
3.2 Nondestructive testing and quality control
Hydraulic pressure test: pressure Less than or equal to 19 MPa (outer diameter Less than or equal to 88.9 mm) or Less than or equal to 31 MPa (outer diameter > 88.9 mm).
Eddy current testing (ASTM E426): Detect surface and near-surface defects.
Intergranular corrosion test (ASTM A262 Method E): Verify the material's resistance to intergranular corrosion.
